      Introduction to AI literacy

The rise of generative artificial intelligence (like ChatGPT, Bard, and Bing) is transforming learning environments. As students, you now have access to exciting new tools that may help augment your creativity and productivity. But these systems also introduce new ethical challenges around bias, misinformation, and academic integrity.

This module outlines guidelines for understanding and using generative AI ethically and effectively, when it is appropriate. You'll develop critical skills for evaluating generative content and biases in AI systems. You will also learn best practices for transparently generating content while avoiding misrepresentation or plagiarism. Above all, this module aims to empower you as responsible users of AI who uphold academic integrity.

Advances in AI (artificial intelligence) provide exciting possibilities but also responsibilities. In this module, we’ll learn together how to realize AI’s potential while minimizing harm. The goal is to cultivate both your AI literacy and ethics literacy, empowering you to use AI responsibly. Join us as we shape an ethical AI future through knowledge and discernment.

What is AI literacy and why does it matter?

Artificial intelligence is being used more and more in your life - often without you even realizing it. That's why it's crucial for you as a student to gain AI literacy. This means developing skills to understand, use, and evaluate how and when it's appropriate to use AI.

      AI literacy helps you:

      • Recognize how pervasive AI is around you, from social media to voice assistants. Building this awareness is key.
      • Use AI tools effectively and know how to interpret AI content yourself. These capabilities allow you to benefit from AI.
      • Understand core technical concepts like machine learning provides insight into how AI systems function behind the scenes. This fundamental knowledge allows a more informed evaluation of AI capabilities, limitations, and potential issues like algorithmic bias.
      • Critically assess the accuracy and reliability of AI output.
When you have AI literacy, you become better prepared to accept responsibility for its use while also addressing AI's societal impacts. In short, AI literacy empowers you to participate ethically in our AI-driven society. It's a crucial set of competencies for your future.
